Jill Scott is the only daughter of her mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Scott was raised by her grandmother as an sole daughter by her grandmother. Scott was a student at an institution called the Philadelphia High School for Girls followed by Temple University after graduating. There, Scott worked two jobs while she was learning about secondary education. She hoped she would become an English high school teacher. After three years of being teacher's assistant and studying the possibility of becoming a high-school English teacher fell through. She started her career doing live performances of poems as well as writing her own material. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me is the result of their collaboration. In an Roots concert, she came out as an artist. Afterwards she was able to negotiate collaborations with people like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. While on the Canada tour of Rent, the Broadway musical Rent, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first artist signed with Hidden Beach Recordings.
